Since the series of earthquakes in 2010 and 2011, over 1300 buildings in the Christchurch CBD have been demolished including 35 of the 50 tallest buildings in the city. This unprecedented work in New Zealand was paralleled and followed by extensive horizontal infrastructure repair, contaminated land remediation, and the reconstruction of hotels, offices, apartments, and civic buildings. In this walking tour, we will examine large scale projects under construction, dilapidated sites holding back the rebuild, and discuss the changing dynamics of the city centre and how environmental compliance works in this dynamic environment. We will be incorporating the Cathedral, the Convention Centre, the Town hall and some barrier sites on High Street/Hereford Street.
