Since the series of earthquakes in 2010 and 2011, over 1300 buildings in the Christchurch CBD have been demolished including 35 of the 50 tallest buildings in the city. This unprecedented work in New Zealand was paralleled and followed by extensive horizontal infrastructure repair, contaminated land remediation, and the reconstruction of hotels, offices, apartments, and civic buildings. In this walking tour, we will re-examine large scale projects under construction visited in the 2019 conference, dilapidated sites holding back the rebuild, and discuss case studies of complex project in the CBD. The evolving city centre and how environmental compliance works in this dynamic environment will be discussed throughout.
